Electrical commissioning readiness: what to verify before functional testing

Commissioning problems rarely begin during the test. They usually begin earlier—in incomplete documentation, unresolved installation issues, unclear system boundaries or equipment that was energized before the project was truly ready.

1. Confirm installation quality

Walk the actual system against approved drawings, specifications and manufacturer requirements. Verify labeling, terminations, grounding, clearances, protective devices, housekeeping and closure of material deficiencies.

2. Make documentation usable

Current one-lines, approved submittals, test reports, startup records, settings and issue logs should be available to the people performing and witnessing the work—not scattered across inboxes.

3. Define system boundaries

Identify the source, distribution path, controls, interlocks, redundancy scheme and downstream loads included in each test. Clear boundaries reduce unsafe assumptions and prevent incomplete demonstrations.

4. Verify prerequisites before scheduling

Equipment startup, point-to-point checks, controls validation, preliminary alarms, safety planning and responsible-party availability should be complete before functional testing begins.

5. Plan for issue ownership

Every deficiency needs an owner, target date, retest path and closure evidence. A short list that is actively managed is more valuable than a large report nobody owns.
